Why Electing an Incumbent is a Good Idea

Well, here is a slightly self-serving take.

As we dive into election season, I want to share my thoughts about the benefits of re-electing incumbents, like me! Now, before you roll your eyes and think, “Of course, Shila Sharps wants us to pick her!” please keep reading! I’m here to share perspective on why sticking with an experienced face may be the smartest move for our community.

  1. Consistency is Key

We all love a little consistency. Incumbents know the ropes and what needs to be done. Voting for someone already in office means you won’t be introducing a challenging Sudoku puzzle (a.k.a. new governance) into the mix. We’ve all had enough surprises, right? (I know you’re all nodding here!)

  2. Familiar Face at the BBQ

As your incumbent, I’m the friendly face you see at community events. I’ve built solid relationships with residents, which means we can make decisions more smoothly without having to reintroduce ourselves every time. Something I’m super proud of is that I’ve attended over 95% of all community events I was invited to, to show my support over the past four years!

  3. Navigating the Maze of Local Government

Let’s face it: figuring out local government can feel like navigating a corn maze blindfolded. Do we really want someone still looking for the exit sign? As an incumbent, I’ve gone through the twists and turns (truly), so I can stay focused on tackling what really matters without hitting dead ends. Trust me, I know where all the exits are! (OK, you’ve got to admit; we’ve shown you every door and hallway. Yes, even the closet corners, over the last four years!)

  4. Holding Myself Accountable

Here’s the deal: when you vote for an incumbent like me, you can easily hold me accountable for my actions (or lack thereof). You can reflect on my performance, like a food critic doling out reviews at a restaurant! If I’ve done my job well, I’d love your vote to keep that positive momentum going. And if not? Well, that’s what elections are for.

  5. Change Doesn’t Have to Mean Chaos

While I’m all for fresh ideas and new energy in our community (because who doesn’t love a new perspective?), incumbents can also embrace change without sending everyone into a tailspin. I know what works, and I’m ready to incorporate thoughtful new approaches while keeping sight of our accomplishments.

A Blend of New and Familiar Faces

There are several fantastic new candidates this election that have put their name forward! Having both incumbents and fresh faces creates a great balance that can advance our community forward. By electing incumbents, you’re not shutting the door on new ideas; instead, you’re ensuring that experience supports innovation. Together, a council with new and familiar faces can tackle challenges and celebrate victories!

As you prepare to cast your vote, consider the benefits of re-electing an incumbent like me alongside some exciting new candidates. Experienced voices that add a sense of stability can make all the difference for Medicine Hat. I want to keep the momentum going and work together for a bright future!

Happy voting!
