Shine the light. Fix the problem.

I’m Shila Sharps. A councillor who stays in the room when things get hard. We’ve brought tough topics into the open, and now I’m working on the repair: better oversight, practical timelines and public updates.

I believe in a Medicine Hat that welcomes every background, supports local business and protects taxpayers. I listen, I explain where I stand and I treat everyone with respect. Part bulldog, part bridge-builder.

Shila’s background in HR provides her with a unique understanding of City Hall and the importance of a positive culture. This experience is of great value to have sitting at the table as there are many factors to always consider with how decisions are made and how they may, or may not, impact one of our City’s largest expenditures and most important resources, the human resources.

what to expect from shila

integrity.

I prides myself on having the ability to stand up in tough situations and speak the truth. I am very comfortable having hard conversations and getting uncomfortable in some of those conversations as I recognize the value of healthy debate. I believe in doing the right thing, even when some have a difficult time accepting it as the right thing.

Diversity and inclusion.

For me, this means bringing people with different backgrounds and experiences to the table to ensure the City of Medicine Hat has the best chance for progression, growth and abundance. I believe council can assist in being Ambassadors.

Transparency

I am commited to being transparent on how I vote and provide background on the items that affect Medicine Hat citizens.  Free-flowing conversation in Council is necessary for Council to regain a trusting relationship with the general taxpayer. However, at times I will protect our third-party participants and anything that needs to maintain confidentiality. This is the role of a councillor.

Culture

Medicine Hat has an entrepreneurial culture with a strong arts community that significantly contributes. I welcome new businesses and at the same time recognizes the importance of our current businesses. All of the empty infield we have needs life breathed into it again with small and medium-sized businesses that provide consistent employment and improves the community through their offerings.
